Class Description
In Japanese Woodworking Tools: Their Spirit, Tradition, and Use Toshio Odate describes a traditional toolbox used by Japanese carpenters to carry their tools to the jobsite and store them when not in use. In this class, you'll build a pine box inspired by Odate's design and take it home ready to use (or customize with your own internal dividers or tills). With its nailed butt joints, applied bottom, and sliding top, this design makes for a box that is quick to build, very rugged, handsome, and secure. Your box will be assembled with traditional square nails, and the lid and base will be made of pine plywood. The class will focus on basic skills, like crosscutting, clamping, and boring and is suitable for beginning woodworkers.
Tools Provided
- Japanese Saws
- Hand Planes
- Hammers and nails
- All other tools needed for the class
For your safety, be sure to wear closed toe footwear and remove all jewelry before class.
