Auriou Hand-Stitched Rasps Are Back!

French-made Auriou rasps have long been a mainstay for sculptors, patternmakers and chairmakers, but the aggressive cut and smooth finish left by these steel works of art will endear them to anyone who works wood. After a year-long interruption in the supply of Auriou rasps, we are excited to offer them once again in limited quantities.

Progress on my Lower Cabinet

By Dilo Marcio Fernandino
Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil

I am back again to report to Wood News readers about some woodworking battles I have fought and won since the publication of my previous article describing my initial work building a rococo-style lower cabinet in my tiny closet-sized woodshop. These victories were achieved in the areas of both design and construction.

Here we go:

Q & A

I am trying to make whirligig hubs that are 3/4 x 3/4 x 3 inches, plus they have a diagonal cut in each end of the hub for the wings of the whirligig. The diagonal cut is what I cannot do. Can you suggest how to safely cut them with repeatable accuracy?

E-mail us with your woodworking questions. If yours is selected for publication, we'll send you a free Highland Woodworking hat.

Some Great Books

By George T. (Terry) Chapman
Fairburn, Georgia

I have always been a book kind of guy and on many subjects I would almost as soon read about it as do it. There are dozens of books in my home on many topics of interest, but as you can imagine, woodworking and turning are two of my favorites. My collection includes some old books along with some more modern ones.

Here are three good ones:

3-D Furniture Design Using SketchUp, Part 2

By Sean Headrick
San Jose, California

In last month's article we constructed the #622 Stickley trestle table. In today's article we will use that model to see how tools such as "scenes" and "layers" can help make the information in your model readily available when it is time to start building.

Here's how it works:

Going Pro as a Woodworker

We are pleased to have shared Douglas Bittinger's highly informative 10-part series on "Going Pro as a Woodworker" as a monthly column in Wood News during the past year. All ten columns are archived on our website, and together they constitute a compelling resource for anyone contemplating trading their office cubicle for something that many of us are highly passionate about. Doug is the proprietor of Smoky Mountain Woodworks in Edwina, TN. Many thanks to him for so thoroughly articulating what is involved in turning one's woodworking hobby into a professional woodworking business. For everyone's convenience, here are links to each of the 10 articles.

You'll Love our Great New Blade Sharpening Service

"Recently I used your saw sharpening service and I wanted to let you know that they did a super job on my blade. I not only needed the blade sharpened, but one tip was missing and they replaced it as well. Turn around time was only about a week from my home in Tennessee. The blade cuts as good as a new one. You can bet that I will be using you again when needed."

Thanks, Charles Arkon

What's So Special
About FastCap?

Some of you may be familiar with FastCap and the many innovative products they manufacture, but most of you are probably not aware of how the company came to be. Paul Akers, the owner, invented the Fastcap – that beginning is documented on his website at fastcap.com.

For decades we have offered milk paint, the wood finish that was historically used on early American furniture. It's appropriate for any project where an earth-tone finish is desired. Milk paint comes in powdered form which you mix with water. When applied, it dries flat with a rustic texture.

We are pleased to announce that we now also offer SafePaint, a brand new milk paint product especially formulated for use as an environmentally-friendly wall paint.

More good news: First-time users of our milk paint products can receive a $5 mail-in rebate.
