This month the Down to Earth Woodworker explores the world of pilot hole drilling using a tool made for the job, examines things to consider to make your shop more environmentally friendly, makes the case that there are no "bad tools," and delves into whether the moisture trapped in wood puts it at risk of damage due to freezing during cold weather.

Wet Sanding

When a silky smooth finish is what you are after, wet sanding is definitely the key to success. Achieving that flawless surface is what we all desire on our projects after all of the hard work and effort.

Here are EIGHT tips that will help:

Ask the Staff

Question:   I'm sort of new to bandsaws, but I want to use mine for cutting pieces out of whole, small logs to make picture frame material. I would like a nice 80" resaw blade for my bandsaw so I can rip pieces out of the small logs I get. The current blade I have does not cut along the grain well at all. Can you point me in the right direction as to what's the best blade you sell for this job?

E-mail us with your woodworking questions. If yours is selected for publication, we'll send you a free Highland Woodworking hat.

Another Testimonial for the WOOD SLICER

This is just a quick note to tell you how satisfied I am with the Wood Slicer bandsaw blade I bought from you. Though it was somewhat of a chore to bring it to Brazil, it was worth all the effort. It cuts fast and makes a very thin kerf. Resawing has never been so pleasant. Next time I'm in the U.S., I plan to get other sizes. I would like to visit your shop in Atlanta. Thank you.
