Why I Belong to a Woodworking Club

Roscoe, IL

I would encourage all of you to make a point of getting to know your fellow club members better and enjoy becoming a part of their lives.

The Maker's Mark

By W. Lee Tigner Jr.
Dawsonville, GA

My clients often comment that their favorite thing about my work is my signature, which is a branded emblem including literally, my signature. Branding is a sign of the maker, a distinctive mark that is unique to you, the artist.

Do you feel a sense of loss when a piece leaves your workshop? Maybe you need your own MAKER'S MARK!

Do you have a great idea for staying alert and helping to avoid injuries in your workshop? If so, we want to hear about it! Receive a $25 store gift card if we feature your tip in a future issue.

This month's tip comes from Lee Ohmart, who has come up with some strategies for countering the afternoon slump that many of us experience.

Lie-Nielson Tool of the Month:
The #62 Low Angle Jack

Lie Nielsen's Low Angle Jack Plane is based on the Stanley 62. With its 14" long cast ductile iron body and heavy 2" wide by 3/16" thick iron bedded (bevel up) at just 12°, this plane's low cutting angle (~37°) lets it cut smoother than any other plane, especially on end grain.

Lee Laird, of Lie-Nielsen Toolworks, recently wrote a couple of posts for our blog about this "Jack of All Trades" handplane:

By Steven D. Johnson,
Racine, Wisconsin

For December, the Down to Earth Woodworker, Steven Johnson, has trade shows on the brain, and he provides a great article with strategies for how to get the most out of the next woodworking trade show you attend. He then follows that up with a great review of the new JDS Air-Tech HP Air Cleaner, and then finishes up with a couple of video updates on the progress he has made on the new desk/assembly table/clutter-catcher he is building for the Down to Earth Workshop.

Insights into Sanding a Sculptured Rocker

By Charles Brock
Columbus, Georgia

Final sanding of a rocker is a marathon, not a sprint! Sanding a rocker takes a lot more time than the initial roughing out. I can build a rocker in a couple of days. Sanding is something different. I used to do it by hand. Then I found some ways to save time.

Rocking Chair Super Instructional Bundle

First you build the rocker. Then you sculpt it into a piece of functional art. The Rocker Plan Bundle gives you all you need to know to build. The Shaping a Sculptured Rocker DVD helps you master the sculpting process.

Why Not Write an Article for Wood News?
We actively solicit contributions of editorial material (articles, photos and videos) from our customers and readership, and for every one we accept and publish in Wood News Online , we will compensate the contributor. We typically pay up to $100 (in the form of a store credit) for a thousand-word-plus article with photos.

Ask the Staff

Question:   I would like an 8" jointer, but lack 220V power. If 13" planers can be made with 110V motors, why not an 8" jointer?

E-mail us with your woodworking questions. If yours is selected for publication, we'll send you a free Highland Woodworking hat.

Another Testimonial for the WOOD SLICER

Hi. The Wood Slicer bandsaw blade you sent me is, in itself, a work of art. I was literally shocked when it cut through five inches of hard maple during a resaw attempt as if the proverbial hot knife through butter! Kudos to you and the manufacturer.

Thanks for your time.
— David S.
