A Woodworker's Dream

By Dick Rank
Atlanta, GA

If you are a wood collector or woodworker, pull over next time you see a large pile of sawdust and smell wood smoke. Some time ago while driving up in Western North Carolina, I stopped to investigate such a scene, and what I found was a large portable band saw lumber mill, a large log yard stocked with a variety of wood species, and a very talented local sawyer and woodworker.

Do you have a great idea for staying alert and helping to avoid injuries in your workshop? If so, we want to hear about it! Receive a $25 store gift card if we feature your tip in a future issue.

This month's tip comes from Jay Slavec, who is proud to still be able to count to ten after 20 years of professional furniture making.

By Steven D. Johnson,
Racine, Wisconsin

Now that the Down to Earth Woodworker has moved into his new workshop, he is contemplating some improvements from his previous shop configuration. The first item he sets his sights on is an ingenious clamp rack that holds the clamps horizontally, saving space and allowing for a lot more flexibility in storage options. After completing this satisfying task, he approaches several random acts of woodworking, including helping a friend out with a basic toolkit, updating his shop-built router table which succumbed to humidity in storage, and of course, getting ready for some winter woodworking with a new coffee mug warmer.

Ask the Staff

Question:   I would like to add some bench dogs to my workbench. I built the top of my workbench from a piece of a bowling alley lane, and would like to either purchase or make my own dogs. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Another Testimonial for the WOOD SLICER

Just a short note to say that I just used your Wood Slicer blade for the first time today! It's incredible.

It surpasses any promise you made about it. What a joy to use -- a quick touch up with the thickness planer and my maple will be ready to use. The set up instructions were great -- they are now taped to the face of the bandsaw permanently.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
— Paul Z.
