Dovetails have long been recognized as one of the strongest and most beautiful joints in woodworking. Modern dovetail jigs may have the edge on a fine craftsman and his dovetail saw for accurate and repeatable results when many joints need to be cut. A little experience and good instructions will teach you everything you need to know to maximize your jigs potential. To help you get your best results quickly, checkout these Tips for using a Dovetail Jig:
5 Tips for Using A Dovetail Jig
- Safety - always wear eye and hearing protection when using a router. Fasten the dovetail jig securely to your workbench.
- Smooth - gently sand the router base with fine sandpaper, then apply GlideCote or wax to the base surface to ensure a smooth ride.
- Square - it is imperative that your board ends be cut perfectly square.
- Tighten - if your jig has moveable fingers, tighten all the finger screws tight, including those on fingers you are not using.
- Test - test your cuts on scrap wood the same size as your finished project.
Making dovetails with a dovetail jig will become routine once you have a few trials under your belt. Read our complete article Tips for using Dovetail Jigs. |
