You'll Love our Mail-In Blade Sharpening Service

"Recently I used your saw sharpening service and I wanted to let you know that they did a super job on my blade. I not only needed the blade sharpened, but one tip was missing and they replaced it as well. Turn around time was only about a week from my home in Tennessee. The blade cuts as good as a new one. You can bet that I will be using you again when needed."

Thanks, Charles Arkon

In this issue of Wood News Online, we are kicking off a brand new monthly column. We are calling it The Down to Earth Woodworker.

This month we will investigate exactly who is "the Down to Earth Woodworker." Buying a New Router and Router Table

By George T. (Terry) Chapman
Fairburn, Georgia

Do you remember a few weeks ago when I talked about buying a new router with the profits from my furnituremaking exploits? Well I decided to go for it, and when I went to Highland I was really impressed with the Triton 2-1/4 HP router.

One of the guys at the store showed me how well it works to mount this router under a router table. It effectively eliminates any need to buy one of those expensive third-party router lifts. I ended up buying the Triton router, plus the full-size Kreg Precision Router Table to go with it.

What makes the Triton router work so well in a router table?

Finishing Wood
with Alan Noel

Stripping the Finish

wood finishing

By Alan Noel
Atlanta, GA

Since the finish is so important to the overall value of antique furniture, stripping has been considered to be a bad word. Stripping the old finish would have to be a last resort.
This also leads us down a slippery slope when antique value is in question and this is, since none of us were around when the piece was made, how do we know definitively what the original finish actually was?
Nevertheless, sometimes stripping the finish is unavoidable.

Here are some tips to make the job easier:

New Rikon 10" Bandsaw
Only $199.99, save $80!

This little gem has already proven itself to be an excellent value as a 10" bandsaw, especially at this low introductory price. In our tests at the store, we installed a Wood Slicer resawing blade on the Rikon 10-305 bandsaw, carefully adjusted all the guides, then proceeded to resaw uniform slices 1/64" thick off the length of a 4x4. We highly recommend it as your first bandsaw bought on a budget, or as a second bandsaw that allows you to avoid constantly swapping blades on your main bandsaw.

An Introduction to Sphere-Based Turning

By Joe Skehan
Salt Lake City, UT

Most wood turning is performed on material mounted in a single plane; the wood is placed between centers or held in a check. It is then worked perpendicular or parallel to the grain. However, as early as the 16th century, turners discovered that if the material being worked was in the shape of a sphere, then it could be worked from any point, rotated and then worked from any other point, producing concentric designs.

What is the secret to all sphere-based creations?

Recent WOOD SLICER Testimonial
Wood Slicer resawing
blade
I recently purchased three band saw blades for my 10 inch Inca 260, included in the purchase was a Wood Slicer Bandsaw Blade. When I unwrapped it, I realized this was something special. I immediately installed the Wood Slicer, fired up the machine and started cutting 6 " X 6" White Oak rough stock. Results? WOW, is all I could say to myself. The cuts were so good I had to look twice to see the cut side from the machine planed face! What a blade, I have never been more pleased with a bandsaw blade and its performance! — R. Simon
