Windsors Chairs:
Why it all Adds Up
By Peter Galbert
Princeton, MA
When I was an art student, just about everyone spent their time trying to make unique or original
work. A worthy goal, but dangerous in the hands of a bunch of twenty year olds. As I learned the
craft of woodworking, this attitude seeped in. I was sure that if I learned the tools and materials
that something new would emerge. And as my interest turned to making chairs, the absolute last thing
on my mind was making some sort of "reproduction".
Find out what Peter discovered that changed his mind:

Getting That 'Shabby Chic' Look
A decorative finish can dramatically reinvent a tired old piece of furniture. There are many
businesses that are buying up old furniture and "stylistically re-purposing" them for the
marketplace. To create this look there are as many methods as there are folks doing them.
Here are EIGHT tips to help you achieve a great shabby chic look:

Steven Johnson, our Down To Earth Woodworker, has been busy building his new Down To
Earth Workshop this month, but he took some time out to offer his thoughts on the idea of a
summertime 'break' from woodworking, as well as to provide us a detailed review of his latest
Festool purchase, the Trion D handle jigsaw. He wraps up with a thorough account of completing the
insulation and wall covering on his new workshop, including some new videos!

Honoring U.S. Soldiers:
A Woodworking Shop in Afghanistan
As we celebrate our freedom and independence here in America on the 4th of July, here's a salute to
the brave men and women in our Armed Forces who are serving our country while deployed in
Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. A recent letter from Army soldier Roscoe (Randy) Harris included a
few photos of the woodworking shop that he and fellow soldiers built on their base in Kandahar,
Afghanistan.

Lie-Nielson Tool of the Month:
The Lie-Nielsen Dovetail Saws
This month we're highlighting the series of Dovetail Saws offered by
Lie-Nielsen. Modeled on 19th century joinery saws, these are the best you can buy for dovetailing
and carcass joinery. Beveled brass backs lend perfect heft and stiffness, so they cut with virtually
no added pressure from you.
As usual, our friend Lee Laird provided some great insight into the use of these tools on The
Highland Blog.

Building A Cradle with the Late James Grisham
By Charles Brock
Columbus, GA
I received a call for help from a sweet lady named Linda Grisham. Her story was very interesting,
the kind that tugs at your heart and keeps you from forming the word "No" as a response.
Linda explained that her husband James was a woodworker and had built several Maloof style pieces
of sculptured furniture. He'd finished several rockers and was working on a cradle when a drunken
driver hit and killed him during one of his early morning bike rides near Carrolton, Georgia.
Linda asked if I would finish the cradle because their first grand child was due in June. See
what I mean?

Question:
Help! I've used Formby's Tung Oil Finish, and have been pleased with the glossy finish. But
now I want to learn how to use "pure tung oil". What should it be mixed with for different types of
finishes and applications? Is it used alone, in the pure form? If so, how is it applied? Also please
tell me about drying time in its various forms.

Another Testimonial for the WOOD SLICER
I normally don't write letters, but I received a Wood Slicer band saw blade from
you yesterday and put it on my 14 inch band saw. Boy was I impressed! 1/64" slices out of 8/4" Red
Oak like butter. A super light sanding and ready for finish! What a great band saw blade!
